FASN is responsible for synthesizing the fatty acid palmitate.  Palmitate in turn can be used by the cell for energy production and energy storage or can be converted to more complex fatty acids and lipids which serve as essential components for cell growth. Typically, most healthy adults obtain palmitate from their diet and do not rely on FASN to provide this building block material. However, in many patients with NASH, palmitate production is abnormally increased and in certain types of tumors there is an increased dependence on FASN in order to provide palmitate to support cell growth and proliferation.
